ABSTRACT
Transport,
which is the movement of people, goods, information and services from place to
place, is important for any meaningful economic development- being a nation,
region or locality. Public transport is very important, not only to the
households with no personal conveyance(s), but also to the household with
conveyance(s) because it helps to reduce congestion, which causes accidents, by
removing excess vehicles on the roads. Ajumose public transport, that was
introduced May 19, 2013 by Governor Ajimobi, is very crucial to the development
of Oyo state; it serves as a catalyst- aiding meaningful development. The aim
of the research work is to look into the general operation; how its operation
has affected the state positively or negatively.
The survey was conducted at Akinyele Local
Government that has its Local Government office located at Moniya, Ibadan. The
data for the study were collected via two major sources: primary data and
secondary data. Primary data were collected by the distribution of well-
structured questionnaires to respondents that were divided into 80 users and 20
operators. The secondary data were collected or sourced from past relevant
research work, information from the internet and relevant journals.
The views of the operators and users were
clearly reviewed, analyzed and discussed. From their views, a lot of benefits
and problems were discovered. Benefits like: ease of movement, cheaper fare and
so many more; and problems like: sellers’ nuisance, overcrowding, long loading
time and so on. The use of Chi-Square test was employed to analyze the 4
carefully selected hypotheses.
Finally, the conclusion identified the major
problems facing the Ajumose public transport operation and various
recommendations were provided, as given by the operators and users of it, to
further improve its general operation and efficiency.
